Influencing artists, how they have used
colour.
While interviewing Trace, she states that, to some degree she is
influenced by all art and artists, however, 'ironically enough' the
artists she admires are people like Rodney Matthews and Boris Vallejo.
This is ironic as both their styles are similar to each other but,
couldn't be further away from Trace's work. Their style is graphical
and commercial. I was quite shocked when I saw the work of these
artists, it was not what I expected. Although they have differences,
there is some clear resemblance of colour to Trace's work. I am going
to look more closely at this.
Rodney Matthews has worked as a freelance designer of fantasy, science
fiction and fairy tale for thirty years. He is acknowledged worldwide
as being one of the top practitioners in these genres. His originals
have been exhibited at Britain's Chris Beetles Gallery in London's
West End. Matthews originals are owned by celebrities including, John
Cleese and Terry Jones who have 5 between them. Over eighty of his
designs have been published as poster prints. |
Matthews work at first sight appears to have
no immediate similarities to that of Goldsmiths work. However at a closer
look, I can see inspirations
through colour and the colour theory. Matthews uses muted colours that
enhance the imagination, such as Indigo, greens and blues which connect us
with relaxation, peace and tranquillity.
Boris Vallejo was born in lima, Peru. Boris attended the national school
of fine arts in his native country before immigrating to the US in 1964.
He has a great volume of work in the fantasy field, he has worked at high
profile publishing houses in the fiction/ fantasy line. His mastery of oil
painting is immediately and abundantly clear to anyone who looks at his
work. For sheer dauntless bravura, few have ever pushed the limits as does
Boris with his beautiful maidens and fearsome monsters.
